Budget cuts in Lake County resulting from the Good Government Initiative are in the news today (here and here). So is the talk of impending layoffs.
I wish that I could say that I feel encouraged that Lake County government is finally starting to see the light but I don’t. As The Times pointed out today in an editorial, it seems that the proposed cuts and layoffs have more to do with politics and less with good government.
I tried writing much more on this; indeed there is no shortage of material and opinion on this subject. It’s just that I’m too disgusted by it all. I’m tired of the power struggles, the pissing matches, and the protection of the patronage system. Maybe its time to let the Republicans have a go at county government.
